More Money

No… No… it’s not me crying out. I am satisfied with the amount of money that I get (Of course I will not mind more). This post is for the West Indian players who failed to make the trip to Sri Lanka. They have yet again betrayed die hard West Indian fans like me and my friend Nakul (a close fiend of mine from school). Irrespective of victories or defeats (which have been the order of the day), both of us have always supported the team and even a slightly good performance from them has made us very happy.

There has been this sponsorship row that has been going on for the last 6 months and doesn’t seem to end. First they form a players association and fight for it and then now they have asked the ICC to step in to sort out the issue. I have no problems with the association or their demands for more money. But let’s face the facts.

How many series, forget series, matches has the team won for the last 3-5 years. They have even struggled to beat minnows like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The only significant result that I have seen is the victory in the last ICC champion’s trophy. There is something I should point out here. Well played guys, you really gave a lot of joy to me and Nakul. We did party in our own small way. Both of us thought that this would be the turning point. But, that didn’t happen. All we got to see were more and more loses. The performances never improved. Blasted away in less than 3 days against most opposition. No glimmer of even a fight. Lost to England in both the away and home series. Nothing improved against South Africa either.

All that happened was hat the board was blamed for not paying more. The players wouldn’t go to the Sri Lanka series just because the board didn’t pay more. Why don’t these guys understand that from where will the board get more money to pay unless there are results. All of us understand that you have commitments but I think you are paid for performing like in any other job. If you don’t perform you don’t get paid. It’s as simple as that. Here for one moment I am not saying that the board is correct. I think the board did not invest correctly when they had money to develop cricket in this part of the world. They just thought that the big guns like Ambrose, Walsh etc would just play on forever.

But guys whatever said you have totally disappointed us. And at the end we hear people like Ridley Jacobs and Darren Ganga criticize Lara to be the reason why some team members don’t perform. They claim he is not a team man. Let me please stress here that no matter what you guys say he is the best batsman in the world (Even better than Sachin). He has been the only shining light in WI cricket for a long time. He has single handedly helped WI win matches. I think you owe something to the man. And Mr. Ganga you score half the runs (first get into this depleted side at least) and then talk.

Guys one thing for sure, both myself and Nakul will always support you and cheer for you. But please grow up and start thinking properly and show us some fighting spirit in the matches. You have a great history and don’t let all of us down.

I hope at least some players from the team would read this. Lara please fly down to Sri Lanka and play, don’t bother about what they say. The team needs you.

At the time of writing this post WI are tottering at 52/6 in the 2nd innings in the 1st test match against SL.

The performance of the cricket players is in no way connected to the revenue of the board. The board earns from the sponsorships as well as the match fees for playing in that particular country. The major bulk of the revenue is from sponsorships. The best way to illustrate this is by taking the case of the Indian Cricket Board.

It’s the richest cricket board, while the team is placed at 8th position in the cricket team ratings. Its largely due to the status of Cricket and Cricket Players amongst the 100 Crore population of the country. Companies would die to sponsor the game. WI is a smaller country, moreover the population is finding other alternatives to cricket; cricket is no longer a craze there, hence lesser sponsors and less is the money they are willing to pay.

If the WI board wants to make money they have to give in to what the sponsors say. Which is exactly what they are doing – asking its players to drop the competitor’s sponsorship. WI Board has few options left, if they want money they need to go on with what they are doing presently.

My point is that if the players perform then more people will watch adn the game can be revived.... now the players are not to be blamed totally but they have to take part of the blame...

if you perform then you can rule the roost

Even if they perform, the amount of money the sponsors will be willing to put in will be very less to satisfy the players.

Anyway, I am also hoping that things turn for good there.

Lets see what happens!!!
