A Preview to the 2005/06 EPL Season

The 2004/05 was absolutely great. A new champion was crowned in the name of Chelsea FC. There first title in 50 years. They just left the like of Arsenal and Manchester United way back with lots to ponder upon. All they could do was fight for a title in the final of the FA Cup which Arsenal won in the penalty shoot out. It was unfair to Manchester United because they dominated the game and had most of the chances but could not convert. Just a reflection of how there season was. A hard fought relegation battle which saw for the first time the bottom placed club during Christmas survive. The club was West Brom at the expense of Southampton, Norwich City and Crystal Palace. West Brom was managed by ex England and Manchester United player Bryan Robson. Southampton got relegated after 37 consecutive years in the Premiership.

The 2005/06 beckons to be a 4 horse race with clubs of the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Champions League winners Liverpool eyeing the Premiership trophy. We have new comers Wigan, Sunderland and West Ham who along with West Brom and few others would fight the relegation battle. There obviously would be a fight for 5- 8 places with Everton, Bolton, Aston Villa, Fulham, Tottenham, Manchester City and Newcastle United fighting get a chance to play in Europe next season which means a lot more money and hence more spending power to get fresh players in and also a chance to pay off the debts.

The transfer market for the 2005/06 season has been heating up over the last 2-3 weeks. Arsenal have lost there talismatic captain Patrick Viera. Now they try to bridge the huge hole in midfield through Fabrigas. A young bloke who has a lot of potential which still he is still to prove at the Big Stage. Manchester United have lost their long serving servant Phill Neville to Everton and for the first time the Neville brothers will square up against each other in the premiership when ManU visit Goodisson Park for the opening fixture against Everton. They also have lost Kleberson to Portuguese club Benfica. Chelsea however have not lost any of their top guns.

Manchester United have signed Fulham Goalkeeper Edwin van Der Saar who looks to fill in the boots of the great Dane Peter Schmichael and Park Ji Sung an energetic South Korean Midfielder.

Chelsea have signed Del Horno and Shaun Wright Phillips thanks to the big spending Russian Oil Owner Abramovich. Like they said the transfer market is totally different when Chelsea is involved. It just gathers pace and looks lively when they are in.

Manchester United is looking to sign Michael Owen and Brazillian Cicinho while Chelsea is looking to sign Micheal Essien from Lyon.

Forgot to tell Steven Gerrard just did a u-turn and pledged his career to Liverpool and also Rio Ferdinand has signed a 4 year deal with Manchester United after long days and months of discussions.

The talk of the managers has started and each is having psychological battles with the other trying to catch them off guard. But all of us know all talk and no result means nothing at all.

The Champions League Qualiying rounds saw Liverpool and Man United in sublime form with Stevn Gerrard and Ruud/Rooney/Ronaldo all scoring for their respective clubs. Everton lost to Villareal in there opening clash at home and looks like bowing out of the competition very soon.

If last season is anything to go by then this season is going to be bigger and better. Better players at view and that calls for lots of fantastic football. It’s going to be breathtaking action in the EPL, European Champions League and UEFA Cup.

I am happy I am at home this weekend to watch the start of the season with the first match between my favorites Manchester United taking on Everton away at Goodison Park. Just watch out for the big guns to take center stage this season. A much closer battle beckons.

Can’t wait for the action to get underway on Aug 13th.
