The EPL Week that went by.

Most felt that last week’s round of matches in the EPL would just be the same where we would see at maximum a goal a match. There has been a lot of criticism on the premiership that it’s becoming very boring because teams have become very defensive. They claim that the flare has reduced and teams are just contempt in scoring 1 and at max 2 goals and sit back and defend. But the faithful claim that it’s the start of the season and hence players are just getting into the groove and so as the season goes on one would get to see the more attacking and fast paced blend of football.

How true were the faithful!! They couldn’t have got it more spot on. Seven games into the premiership for most teams (some teams have played less because of UEFA Cup ND Champions League Qualifications) and the eighth game just gave the supporters what they wanted. Goals (Superb ones…. Not just those tap-ins!).

The most important fixture of course was that between Liverpool and Chelsea. These two teams were meeting for the second time in 3 days (Thanks to the Champions League). The European Champions were dominant in the Champions League group game and had nearly 3 penalties (so claimed) not given. People thought Chelsea were beatable and were going to lose this time around on Sunday, especially because Liverpool was playing at home (Anfield). Some even thought this may end in a draw because Liverpool is considered to be the Kings in draws. But everyone was proved wrong. Liverpool dominated for the first 25 minutes, but thereafter it was disaster. Chelsea scored 4 times and Liverpool had only a solitary goal courtesy of their talismanic captain Steven Gerrard who refused a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer for 32 million pounds. Liverpool for the first time in over 2 years conceded 4 goals in one single game. The 2004 EPL champions proved everybody wrong and keept their 100% unbeaten run going this season. 37 games now unbeaten in the premiership since last year. Impressive Indeed!!! Some people even say that the title is already theirs Well, few teams agree to that. Certainly the challengers Manchester United and Arsenal don’t agree to that. We are just 8 games into the season. Lots of football still to be played. Who knows what may happen but considering present form Chelsea look like winning the league for the second successive year comfortably. Who knows they could also win the quadruple – EPL, UEFA Champions League, Carling Cup and FA Cup.

A couple of other games were interesting. A fight back from Spurs, who came back from being 2 goals down to beat Charlton Athletic 3-2. Manchester United beat Fulham 3-2, thanks to goals from Rooney and Ruud (2). All goals scored in the first half of the game. Midlesborough beat Aston Villa 3-2. Wigan maintained there unBeaten run of 5 games while West Ham salvaged a point away at Sunderland.

Most of the goals scored were brilliant, but this one goal from Danny Mills for Manchester City against Everton was simply superb. A right footed shot from 30 yards from the right side of goal to the top left hand corner. Simply, unstoppable!! A screamer!! It can be compared to a few goals scored by Rooney from similar distance. It was his first goal for his club and what a first goal it was.

The Premiership is back and back with a bang. The attacking style of football which makes it the most entertaining, eye catching and passionate league is back. Who ever questioned it? Well, they just got some spankings/whippings on their back side last week.

I couldn’t watch the matches live because of the Cable Operators strike, but did not miss the repeat telecast and the highlights show on ESPN.

I will be going for home coming this weekend so will miss the World Cup Qualifier games. The premiership returns on the 15th and will be tuning in to watch another exciting weekend of passionate football.

A Manchester United fan!!!
